Surry 2 chief energy plant trips offline

Dominion Virginia Power’s Surry 2 chief section tripped off line today.

Initial indications were that an apparently erring sensor vigilance rescued by a unit’s reactor insurance complement caused a 838-megawatt energy plant’s shutdown, according to a association spokesman.

Nuclear energy plants are designed to shutdown automatically when sensor systems detect a problem with plant conditions.

“It was an basic trip,” Dominion Virginia Power orator Rick Zuercher said. “Everything operated as designed to close a section down.”

The energy plant in Surry County tripped out of use around 8 a.m.

“Station crew are conducting a examination of a shutdown to entirely know what happened,” Zuercher said. “The section is approaching to lapse to use soon.”

The final time Surry 2 automatically close down was Apr 16, 2011, when a hurricane went by a plant’s electrical switchyard and tripped both units off line.
