City landmarks enthuse Tammy Smith’s line of home items
January 24, 2015 - garden totes
A year ago former Hallmark engineer Tammy Smith came adult with a suspicion to emanate a imitation array desirous by cities and their best-known landmarks, beginning, of course, with Kansas City. Now her Tammy Smith Design line of prints, tea towels, pillows, slicing boards, totes and note cards has taken off, and in further to her city designs she has combined dual fun sets of portraits, featuring “Famous Bohemians” and “Famous Babes.”
What’s your background?
I worked during Hallmark 20 years. I’m self-taught, and they lerned me, putting me with artists. That’s how we learned. we left 5 years ago and started a business called Homemade Circus, creation handle and clay sculptures that we showed on a art satisfactory circuit. Last January, we launched Tammy Smith Design. we shaped a line of products and launched them final May during a National Stationery Show in New York, that we used to attend for Hallmark.
What got we started?
I started operative and satisfied that city things was on a upswing. we adore my city, and we adore architecture. we started doing handle sculptures of opposite cities. The Kansas City pattern shows a Performing Arts Center, a Country Club Plaza, a Sky Stations, a World War we Museum, a Nelson-Atkins and Union Station, and also motifs alluding to jazz and barbecue. Two of a KC pillows are now on a set of “Kansas City Live” on KSHB.
What’s a process?
The basement of my designs are sketches in handle that we mountain on vacant canvas. we sketch them and afterwards technology them. It sounds odd, though we worked for years on a computer, and all gets too ideal too fast. The palm of a artist is what we wanted.
So how did a line develop?
It started off as only prints, and Steve Kraske (a Kansas City Star columnist), who is my neighbor, put a Kansas City imitation on Facebook. Several women who saw it said, ‘I would buy that if it were a tea towel,’ and so we started creation them. They sole like crazy by my website and internal shows like Strawberry Swing, Chick Events, and a Gypsy Market Royale in a Bauer Event Space (the former Arts Incubator building) on First Fridays. Then people began requesting tablecloths and tack kits.
What is a tack kit?
My strange suspicion for Tammy Smith Design was tack kits. They come with a front sham cover and dual skeins of thread and easy instructions. we put in dotted lines for stitchers to follow. we wanted people to be means to practice their possess creativity.
So prints, tack kits, tea towels, tablecloths — anything else?
My designs are also printed on receptacle bags, tempered-glass slicing boards, note cards and note pads. One of a places I’m offered a note pads is SouveNEAR, a art vending appurtenance in Terminal B during Kansas City International Airport. They’re labelled during $8.
What’s a cost indicate on some of a other items?
The tea towels go for $24. The tack kits are $20 to $24. For a set of 10 note cards, dual any in 5 designs, a cost is $22.50.
You’ve stretched a line good over that initial Kansas City design.
I bend out depending on what shows I’m doing. we went to a Renegade Craft Fair in Chicago, so we did a Chicago line, and I’ve also finished a St. Louis line, with a Gateway Arch and other obvious sights. we do demeanour adult a tip 5 to 10 landmarks before we start. My son Murphy is in jazz studies during KU, so we did a Lawrence one, and subsequent I’ll do Manhattan, Kan., and Columbia since of requests. I’ve also grown state pillows and posters desirous by ceramic state plates. we suspicion they would be a fun update.
Do we do all this yourself?
I do a prints myself and have a paper products printed locally. The fabric copy is finished out of town. we have 3 seamstresses and another lady who cuts fabric, and high propagandize students who assistance fill orders.
So business is booming?
I’m in 25 stores around a country. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art store bought all of my line: tack kits, posters and pillows of Kansas City, and also my “Famous Bohemians” line that includes Frida Kahlo, Georgia O’Keeffe, Toulouse Lautrec and my “Famous Babes.”
Who are a Famous Babes?
Women we suspicion were standouts for being fearlessly themselves: Marie Antoinette, Cleopatra, Pocahontas and Queen Victoria. we do tons of research. we lift adult as many as 25 photos of a given theme and demeanour during them. Then we put them aside and do my possess portrait.
I wish to supplement a Southern territory to my city line, so I’ll start work on New Orleans, Memphis, Dallas and Nashville. we only did a state sham for Arizona, since I’m streamer to a National Needle Arts Association discussion and uncover this month. we do a lot of shows.
